Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Saturday condemned the illegal and politically-charged UN sanctions adopted by the Security Council against the Islamic Republic of Iran as "unlawful, unnecessary and unjustifiable actions" orchestrated by some of its permanent members.

"This is the fourth time in the last 12 months that in an unwarranted move orchestrated by a few of its permanent members, the Security Council is being abused to take an unlawful, unnecessary and unjustifiable action against the peaceful nuclear program of the Islamic Republic of Iran," he told the Council.

Mottaki, reiterated that the numerous International Atomic Energy Agency inspections have proved that "Iran's nuclear program is completely peaceful," and asked the members, "Wil any of the Council members let similar inspections to take place? Are the permanent members ready to announce only the 'number' of their centrifuges to the world?"

He stressed that the political and economic sanctions imposed on Iran cannot force the Iranian nation to relent in its legal and rightful demands.

He said "pressure and intimidation will not cause us to change our policy," adding that if some countries hope to weaken the great Iranian nation's will by issuing resolutions against Iran, they must be sure that they have once again faced a failure based on wrong information and analysis.

He spoke after the 15 Council members _ mostly just acting as puppets in the hands of the permanent members _ adopted a politically-charged resolution expanding the sanctions imposed on Iran in December.

The new resolution bans all Iranian arms exports and freezes the overseas assets of 28 additional officials and institutions and restricts financial aid or loans to Tehran.

Mottaki replaced Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who late Friday canceled his plans to address the Council as Washington delayed the visa in an illegal act.

"The Security Council's decision to try to coerce Iran into suspension of its peaceful nuclear program is a gross violation of the (UN) charter, and contradicts the Iranian people's right to development and the right to education," the Foreign Minister said.

He reaffirmed Iran's right to conduct uranium enrichment as enshrined by the nuclear Non-Proliferaton Treaty which Tehran signed.

Mottaki said the sanctions resolutions "do not even reflect the views of the Council's own 15 members, since most of them (more than two thirds) were not thoroughly informed about, let alone, engaged in, the discussions held in secret meetings where only a few, among them non-members of the council, decide for the whole Security Council."

The Foreign Minister noted the only benefit the resolution has is that it makes all the free world nations and governments to understand now more than ever that they cannot rely on international mechanisms for gaining their rights.

"Which one of you doesn't know, and of course the world public opinion knows, that two of the Security Council permanent members being aware of the Zionist regime's intention to attack Lebanon, made obstacles the Security Council, the Rome conference and other solutions to make any decision to the stop the regime from committing the crime for more than one month," Mottaki reminded.

"You weren't even able to take a good stance in the face of (the Zionist regime's) bombarding of the UN building in Lebanon and the killing of your own representatives," Mottaki said.

He added that the Security Council is not only responsible for its own illegal acts but must also answer for not responding well in many fields related to international peace and security.
